Seeds that shape the future of agriculture
We have a germplasm base developed over our more than 150 years of history and we develop it by taking advantage of the latest biotech technologies to improve the varieties.
Our innovations produce seeds with genetics that create more productive, more resistant or more sustainable plants, and also provide other specific improvements for the species such as better flavor, better color or greater post-harvest preservation among many others.
But innovation at Fitó goes beyond genetics. By working closely with our clients and actively listening to their specific needs and market trends, we identify areas of innovation linked to the needs of different stakeholders and groups. Our purpose as a company also drives us to work on innovations in sustainability.
Innovations for the food chain
We focus our innovative efforts on 10 plant species: Tomato, Eggplant, Pepper, Cucumber, Zucchini, Melon, Watermelon, Sweetcorn, Beans, and Broad Beans. We have 165 genetic improvement programs for the different types of these species and focus our efforts through 5 Crop Teams. These teams understand customer needs and integrate the demands of all international markets from a global perspective to focus improvement programs and achieve valuable results for the various stakeholders in the food chain.
We constantly develop distinctive traits which leads to the launch of more than 30 innovative varieties each year and beyond we have structured innovation programs specific to groups.
For producers:
Resistors
Developing horticultural resistances is crucial to ensuring food sustainability, reducing dependence on chemical pesticides, and improving agricultural profitability.
New viruses that damage crops are constantly appearing; in recent years, New Delhi virus or powdery mildew has affected cucumbers, and tomato rugose fruit has affected tomatoes.
Through genetic improvement and modern technologies, we have been creating varieties capable of fighting diseases and pests, ensuring higher yields and safer food.
SmartQ
SmartQ genetics offers greater plant health and adaptability.
It exhibits natural resistance to viruses such as CYSDV and forms a basis for the continuous incorporation of new resistances, such as CGMMV, Delhi, and others.
It promotes more aerated and balanced plant growth, reduces losses, and increases yield. It produces high-quality fruit and is adaptable to different types of crops.
Flavourite
Eating is more than just nourishing yourself; it's about feeling emotions and enjoying pleasure.
At Fitó, we have been working on ambitious improvement programs to launch varieties that provide this highly desired flavor.
We compare new products with market benchmarks through expert tasting. When a variety is chosen by consumers in the tasting for its clearly distinctive flavor, we give it the Flavorite seal. This distinction is found on cherry tomatoes and Piel de Sapo melons.

For Industry:
SEEDNERGIC
Thanks to Seednergic technology, sweet corn develops a larger root system, promoting greater nutrient and water absorption, which makes the plant more resistant to stress. This, in turn, allows for greater plant growth and, consequently, a higher final yield.
HARBEST
Harbest genetics creates compact plants, where the grouping of the fruits is ideal to optimize their harvest whether done manually or mechanically, they have peduncles that are easy to detach.
The fruits have specific characteristics that offer excellent performance in processing.
For Retail:
We embrace consumer trends to drive innovation across the food chain, conducting studies to better understand the insights of each species. This allows us to structure our innovation strategies to meet evolving needs.

Innovations in Seedtech:
Seeds need a favorable environment to reach their full potential. With seedtech technologies, we enhance the genetic expression of seeds, optimizing their capabilities. This is based on seed treatments, using different combinations of nutrients and natural microorganisms, including mycorrhizal fungi, fungi of the genus Trichoderma, and soil bacteria that coat the seed and improve crop yield.
Thanks to seed technology, horticultural seeds are customized for each crop through a combination of proprietary products, tested in the laboratory to select those that are miscible, highly concentrated, compatible with other products, and optimal for handling and application to seeds.
Today, broad beans, sweet corn, and tomato rootstocks are taking advantage of this technology.
Fitó Óptima
Thanks to seed technology, treatments that improve germination efficiency in initial stages and enhance productive potential.
Innovations in Sustainability:
Reduction of water footprint
Furthermore, we dedicate 56% of our workforce and 21% of our revenue to R&D, creating more resistant varieties that require fewer inputs and reduce food waste… and in 2024, we successfully measured, for the first time, the ecological footprint of a horticultural variety. An internationally recognized milestone.
Organic
The Fitó Organic range promotes more sustainable agriculture that also protects the environment. Furthermore, this new line responds to growing consumer demand and interest in organic products.
C4 lawn range
Lawns are divided into C3 species (temperate climate), which grow best between 12 and 24°C. They remain green year-round but require more water. C4 species (warm climate) grow best between 24 and 40°C and can withstand higher temperatures with less water. In recent years, these more resilient C4 varieties have been genetically modified to improve their appearance, aesthetics, and user experience, making them a clear sustainable alternative to traditional C3 grasses.
